Shutter won't go up

Stuck open — premises insecure
Usually: the worst-case version of any of the above, at close of trade. We do: prioritise these as emergencies and make the opening secure the same visit, even if parts are on order.
Motor failure & overheating

Why won't my roller shutter come down?
Most often an obstruction or debris in the guide rails, a bent or disconnected lath, a tripped safety edge, or a limit switch that has drifted out of calibration. On electric shutters, check the isolator and breaker first — but never force a shutter that's resisting, as you'll bend the curtain.
Why won't my roller shutter go up?
Typically a failed motor or capacitor, a snapped counterbalance spring making the curtain far too heavy, or a curtain jammed against a damaged guide. A shutter that suddenly feels enormously heavy almost always means a broken spring — stop using it and call us.
Can a broken shutter spring be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Replaced, always. Counterbalance springs are under extreme tension and cannot be safely re-tensioned once failed. Where a shutter uses a matched pair, we normally replace both — if one has gone, the other is the same age and will follow. This is strictly engineer-only work.
What does grinding or screeching mean?
Almost always dry guide rails, worn barrel bearings, or old lubricant that has hardened. It's the cheapest fault to fix and the most expensive to ignore — the extra load wears the motor and distorts the curtain, turning a service into a replacement.
Do you repair all makes of roller shutter?
