- BS EN 13241 — the product standard for industrial, commercial and garage doors. Shutters placed on the UK market must be UKCA marked against it, covering wind load, safe opening, and behaviour under power failure.
- BS EN 12635 — requires installation documentation, handover instructions and a maintenance log book for every power-operated door. We supply this on every install.

Do You Need Planning Permission for Roller Shutters in Manchester?
This is where most Manchester shop shutter projects go wrong — and it's worth knowing before you order, not after.
Manchester City Council's shopfront guidance is explicit: the installation of external shutters will not generally be permitted across the city. The Council asks that less intrusive alternatives be considered first, including toughened or anti-vandal glazing and demountable grilles.
Inside Manchester's conservation areas — St Ann's Square, Deansgate/Peter Street, Smithfield, Stevenson Square and others — the position is tighter still. Solid external shutters are considered environmentally unattractive because they strip visual interest and light from the street, and external shutter boxes will not normally be permitted as they rarely sit comfortably on a historic facade.
What does get approved:
- Internal shutters fitted behind the shop glazing — these generally remove the need for planning permission entirely.
- Open-type curtains — perforated, punched or brick-bond grilles that keep the display visible from outside when interior lights are left on.
- Concealed (built-in) boxes — barrel housed within the reveal rather than bolted across the fascia.
Listed buildings need listed building consent on top of planning permission.
