Why Is My Automatic Shop Door Stuck Open?

Step 1: Clear the Floor and Bottom Tracks
Automatic sliding and swing doors rely on a clear pathway to move freely. Even small pieces of debris can trigger the safety system and hold the door open to prevent damage or injury.
- Check the threshold. Look closely at the bottom floor track or guide channel. Gravel, small stones, litter or accumulated dirt can block the roller guide.
- The fix. Gently sweep out the track and clear any visible blockages. Never force the door leaf along the track manually if you feel resistance.
Step 2: Clean and Inspect the Safety Sensors
Most modern automatic doors use infrared or radar sensors mounted above the door or on the frame. If a sensor "thinks" an object is standing in the doorway, it will hold the door open indefinitely — and it's doing exactly what it's designed to do.
- Check for obstruction. Look for hanging signs, seasonal decorations or tall display items near the entrance that might be swaying into the sensor's field of view.
- Wipe down the lenses. Dust, grime or a heavy cobweb on the sensor lens can scatter the signal. Safely wipe the glass or plastic cover with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
Step 3: Verify the Key Switch / Control Position
It sounds obvious, but automatic doors are frequently switched to "Hold Open" or "Exit Only" by staff during deliveries or shift changes — and then never switched back.
- Locate your wall-mounted program switch or digital selector.
- Ensure the system is set to "Auto" or "Two-Way Traffic" rather than "Hold Open" or "Off".
- If you have a remote control fob, check that a button hasn't been accidentally pressed or jammed inside a drawer.
Step 4: Perform a Controlled Power Reset
Sometimes the internal logic board simply needs a reboot to clear a minor system glitch.
- Turn off the main power switch to the door system (usually a switched fused spur near the door header).
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds to allow the control board capacitors to fully discharge.
- Turn the power back on and observe the door. Most systems will perform a slow "setup" cycle to recalibrate their end positions.
